I got up this morning feeling “Fine and Dandy” and was anxious to get busy. My Saturdays mostly consist of outside chores, cleaning porches, mowing the grass, flower bed maintenance, gardens, pool, cleaning vehicles etc…. I stepped outside with my coffee and oh my did it feel wonderful. It was overcast, cool, and a light breeze blowing. Perfect for all things outside.
After making a quick assessment of all that needed to be done, I settled on tidying up the garden. It was long past producing and was in dire need of some attention, especially if I want to put some fall crops in. I wish I had gotten a before picture so you could see how much attention it needed.
This space has 6 – 25 x 25 plots in it. I cleaned out squash, zucchini, okra, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and started on the corn. I would have been a happy girl if the corn stalks had held up until fall but no such luck. I love to decorate with dried stalks and corn cobbs, but it is too hot and humid here for much to make it through the summer months. The only things I left standing were the cover crops of Sunn Hemp in 2 of the plots, 2 short rows of sweet potatoes, a couple of scattered pumpkins, and Charlotte’s flowers.
There is a small amount of corn stalks standing only because there is a pumpkin vine with a couple of very pretty orange pumpkins intertwined with the stalks. My hope was that the stalks would help shade the pumpkins but it is not looking good. One has already started to rot and I fear the others will be shortly behind.
All in all, it was a very productive day. After working in the garden for several hours, I then mowed all of our grass. And, you know me, I cannot and will not mow without doing the weed eating task too. I finished around 2 pm and I was spent. I asked my hubs to speedily navigate us to the nearest drive through line and order me the largest Coke they had. He did just that posthaste. I do love that fella!
